The first of Rachmaninov's three operas, Aleko is based on a poem 'The Gypsies' by Alexander Pushkin, following the themes of unrequited love and sorrow. The opera was composed in the final years of Rachmainov's studies at the Moscow Conservatory as a graduation exam, winning him the highest prize and securing his future as a prominent composer.
