Recent research has revealed that Bach's Second Brandenburg Concerto (BWV 1047), though surviving as an orchestral work in the dedicatory autograph manuscript, was based on a lost chamber music version for quintet.

By reconstructing this original version for trumpet, recorder, oboe, violin and basso continuo, Klaus Hofmann has recovered a piece of music noteworthy for its rigorous form, lucid timbre and colourful combination of instruments to form a welcome addition to the chamber music repertoire.
