This cantata can be traced back to two earlier works by Bach: The original work was the cantata "Alles, was von Gott geboren" [Weimar, 1715, BWV 80a]; a second version [BWV 80b] was composed in Leipzig between 1727–1731. The simple chorale movement which opens the second version is printed in the appendix of this version of the cantata [BWV 80].
