A short opera, packed with interest, movement and passion. It was was extremely well received and one contemporary critic, Abramo Basevi, even claimed that it inaugurated Verdi’s second manner. The preparation of the libretto, as documented by the abundant correspondence between Verdi and Cammarano, is a topic of great interest in the study of Verdi’s dramaturgy. Luisa Miller was first staged at the Teatro San Carlo of Naples on 8 December 1849.
