Bach’s cantata BWV 13 (from the third cycle of Leipzig cantatas) was first performed on the 2nd Sunday after Epiphany in 1726. This work is _x000D_marked especially by its scoring, unusual in Bach’s church music, in which the strings are joined by two recorders and an oboe da caccia: these wind instruments are used to convey the dominant affections of “sighing” and “pain” in the individual arias. In accordance with the intimate character of this cantata the four-part vocal ensemble is used only in the chorale at the end of the work.
