Robert Simpson’s Symphony No.9 is a powerful experience. There is mystery and a sense of concentrated intensity here carried in a single monumental movement driven by one basic pulse. Simpson composed this work for the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and it was first performed by them, conducted by Vernon Handkley, at Poole in Dorset, On 8 April 1987.
