Towards Freedom?

Towards Freedom? for Orchestra was composed by Per Nørgård in 1977. The piece is dedicated to Amnesty International.

Programme Note:

This short piece for orchestra is dedicated to Amnesty International and composed for their concert in the Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, on 20th October 1977. The music is based on my song “Freedom” (for voice and guitar) to a poem by Walt Whitman from his “Seadrift”, also performed at the concert. The song also inspired me to a larger work – “Seadrift” – for soprano and chamber ensemble. The Conga partis based on my percussion piece ”Waves” (1969). 
The title of the work is “Towards Freedom?”. If the orchestra piece is repeated later in the programme the alternative ending of the piece should be used. And this time the question mark should not be used in the programme (“Towards Freedom”).
